How To Build A WordPress Website For Business Or Side Hustle

How to turn your WordPress site into a social network

Whatever type of business or side hustle you have, having a website can help you reach more people, build trust and boost sales. For entrepreneurs working in the gig economy, the website is a practical requirement. WordPress introduces a free, extremely powerful and extremely versatile tool that any website can easily use to build. And yes, it is better than square space. In this post, you will learn how to build a WordPress website, and optimize it with a great design and complete plugins.

Why WordPress?

Learning how to build a WordPress website is one of the fastest and most effective ways to create a presence online. That’s because WordPress is a proven proposition. Create a website yourself from scratch and there’s a chance that suboptimal code could prevent it from ranking on Google. Or maybe it just looks clumsy on some displays? Or loads slowly.
Perhaps you have no knack for design, and your site has a feel for something built in the Geocities era!

The good news is that WordPress has over 25% of websites on the Internet. This includes some of the largest and profitable in the world. Brands that use WordPress include Sony, the BBC, The Times, Mashable, TechCrunch, Disney, Microsoft .ft …

Heck, but this website was created using WordPress!

If companies like Microsoft .ft think that learning how to build a WordPress website is worthwhile, it will tell you that this is a smart choice. By choosing WordPress, you know that your site will be the least likely to succeed and the brands. Which probably does for most of us!

Those big companies rely on WordPress because it’s powerful and easy to use. The installation is also very simple: Out of the box. It provides a responsive layout and a fully customizable front end and back-end.

But this website was created using WordPress!

The “back-end” is part of a website that only you and your business partners will see: admin panel, statistics and other elements you use to update your pages, WordPress includes this for you to add new posts, Once it’s installed, you won’t need to know any code line to maintain and update it.
WordPress also receives a huge amount of support from a thriving community. You can easily download ready-made themes or plugins that add a range of functionality such as e-commerce stores, mailing lists, comment sections and more. Most of these are free.
Yes, it is better than square space.

Hundreds of features, plugins, and applications that website owners rely on daily for WordPress. If you do not learn how to create a WordPress website, you will not be able to integrate with those services.

Pretty much every web developer is familiar with WordPress, too. That means you can easily hire someone to create a unique theme from scratch or to change the default source code by default – possibly because WordPress is also open source.
In short, once you know how to create a WordPress website, you will know how to create websites in minutes. From there, you’ll be able to easily customize those sites and enjoy countless luxuries and features using powerful features. The use of any other platform makes life unnecessarily complicated.

WordPress vs Squarespace vs Wix

WordPress is a free tool that allows anyone to quickly create a modern and professional website without knowing much code. It sounds awful like Squarespace or Wix; So why not use those tools instead?

Let’s put it this way: BBC America has chosen not to build its website with any of those sites!
The simple reason for this is that when WordPress is open source and self-hosted, there are Wix and Square space hosted solutions. This means that WordPress comes as a set of files that you install on a server of your choice. Then you own that code and those files, and you can do anything you want with them: including moving it to another domain if you want. There is no charge associated with WordPress.
Conversely, when you use Wix or Square Space, those companies will provide you with server space, and you will be forced to rent it from them. That’s how the code will be handled by them, and you’ll need to pay if you want to continue using their services. In short, they own your website.

And while both Wix and Squarespace are highly customizable and powerful, they are not even close to the huge support that WordPress or WordPress enjoys. That’s why I highly recommend that any entrepreneur or small business owner learn how to create a WordPress website; And take the “shortcut”.

WordPress is open source and self-hosted.

That said if all you need is a simple portfolio for your work, and you do not plan to scale your business or take it in new directions in the future, developing or square space may be a good fit for your purposes. But you will be surprised how easy it is to create a WordPress website. So why not take that route just to be safe?

Getting Started: Finding Hosting

So you want to know how to create a WordPress website? Then like poison, your first step is to find a host (random Spider-Man reference).
The host is a company that provides space for storing your website files. This can be a dedicated server (meaning you have all the space on a computer connected to the Internet), or it can share hosting. Shared hosting gives you a small amount of space on a shared machine with other users. Cloud hosting keeps your files on many different servers at once. Of course, more space is more expensive, but most businesses don’t need much space. Other things like bandwidth should also be considered, but again, most businesses will just need the basic package when they startup. You can always upgrade later. Good providers to consider include HostGator and GoDaddy.

Hosting a website with one of these companies will only cost a small amount each month, but the unfortunate catch is that you have to sign up for most months. You will then need to make a small deposit of $ 100- $ 200 but will not need to repay for long.
Most packages will include a free domain name. This is the address that people will search for to find your website. Advice on the best domain for your business is beyond the scope of this post, but it is not enough to think long and hard about how you want to brand yourself. Luckily, you can always add more domain names and point them to your website in the future.
Your domain name is the address that people will search for to find your website.

Once you have paid for your hosting, you will be given a given count. You can use this to access the Control Panel, which gives you access to your files, settings, email (you can create your own email address using your new domain name!) And more.

Next: How to Build a WordPress Website!

How to Create a WordPress Website in Minutes!
Visit the hosting provider you choose and enter your login count details. You should find that with most modern hosts, you will have the option of installing WordPress with a single click. This is as simple as it sounds!

One word of caution though: you should click accept and before proceeding with your installation, you should check the settings and define the password you want to use for WordPress. Otherwise, one will be generated for you and it is extremely difficult to find out what this is!
If your hosting account doesn’t come with one-click installation for WordPress, you have to do it yourself – but it’s still pretty easy. Just go to WordPress.org, and there you will be able to download the latest version of WordPress as a zip file. Unzip these files, then upload them to your server in the root domain (assuming you want people to find your website).

To do that, you’ll need to find a file manager in your hosting account. Again, this usually appears on a regular page and will allow you to browse the files stored on your server, just as you would on your own computer.

Manually installing WordPress is still very easy.

There should be a button that lets you upload files, so just click that and then select the folder you want.

Now open a new tab and go to your website: http://www.example.com. This will automatically execute the installation script and you will be taken the final steps.

Note: You may need to create a WordPress database, which adds an extra step. This is relatively easy to do using a tool like PhpMyAdmin or Plesk and you can find the full details here. Most hosts will provide a database ready for you, so this should not be necessary.
Once the installation is complete, point your browser to your URL again and you should see a very basic one, even though it’s just a website! This defaults to a default theme, but it is modern, responsive (meaning it scales to the size of the display) and is clean.

And that’s how to create a WordPress website in minutes.

Customization basics
Once you have your basic WordPress website, it’s up to you to start customizing it to your heart’s content. To do this, log in to WordPress through your hosting account or by navigating to www.example.com/wp-admin.

This is your admin panel, and here, you’ll be able to add new content and change the look and appearance of your website.
The first thing you need to do is go to Settings> General and select the site title, tagline, and other basic settings.

If you want to change the elements of appearance such as your logo, header, wallpaper, colors, fonts, etc., you will need to navigate to Appearance> Customize. This opens a customizer where you can view your site design on the right and change the default settings on the left.

You’ll be taken to a store where you can find a large number of themes to suit each niche.

I do not recommend doing this yet. Instead, you should go to Appearance> Themes and then add a new one. You’ll be taken to a store where you can find a large number of themes tailored to each niche and brand. Many of these are completely free, and you can easily apply them by clicking Install and Activate. You can also download themes from other websites, such as Theme Forest, and then upload the zip files to install it that way. This way, you can discover a large selection of professionally designed themes. Once you know how to install WordPress and apply a custom theme, you will definitely know how to create a WordPress website!
Plugins and Widgets
Continuing our tour of the admin panel for a moment, you should also check out the Appearance> Widgets page. This will show you widgets that are currently live on your pages, posts, and homepage. Widgets are small elements that reside in the sidebar or at the bottom of your site and can contain all types of mini-applications or useful HTML elements.
Typical uses of widgets include showing social media feeds, displaying the latest posts and promoting products. Set up how you want them and make sure you remove ones you don’t use.

In Plugins> Add New, you’ll be able to search through the different types of plugins available for WordPress. This is also essential if you want to know how to create a WordPress website.

WooCommerce will add a complete e-commerce store to your site.

Plugins are meanwhile applications that work by editing the PHP code that contains WordPress. It can then provide you with new features for users to enjoy, upgraded display and security, additional widgets, modifications to the admin panel, or a whole new functionality for your website.

For example, WooCommerce is a plugin that will add a complete e-commerce store to your site, allowing you to sell physical and digital products. Then it has its own additional plugins that you can use to add support for prejudices and more!

To add new plugins, all you need to do is click Install> Activate. You will then need to find out where the settings for that particular feature are kept in the admin panel. Be sure to read reviews of plugins before installing them, and don’t install too many: they can slow down your site!
Adding content
Once you know how to create a WordPress website, it is yet to be updated with blog posts and pages. You can add new posts by going to Posts> Add New. Here, you’ll find an editor named “Gutenberg”, which makes it easy to create engaging posts using “blocks”.

Type your title where it says “Add a title,” and then add the new text in the space below. You can then hover your mouse over the bottom of that paragraph and click on the “+” sign to add additional blocks. These can be new text paragraphs, images, quotes and more. If you simply paste the article you type into the word document, then the headers and paragraphs will be automatically converted to blocks.

The process of adding new pages is as simple as using the Gutenberg editor. Just go to Pages> Adds New. You can choose which pages are visible to viewers by going to Appearance> Menus. Your latest blog posts will appear by default on your site homepage, but you can change this to display a static page in your settings.
And with that, you know all you need to get started with your website. As you can see, it’s a much simpler process than most people think, and the end result is professional, powerful, scalable and modern.

Now that you know how to build a WordPress website, it’s time to put yourself out there and promote your personal brand!
